The Discovery Centralized Medicinal Chemistry group has an exciting opportunity available for a Scientist whose primary responsibilities will be to (i) execute organic synthetic chemistry research that aligns with project and area goals, (ii) develop and optimize synthetic routes for milligram to multi-gram preparation of target molecules, and (iii) integrate relevant learnings in medicinal chemistry into workflow and novel target design.

Key Responsibilities:

The successful candidate will maintain a high level of productivity in the laboratory setting, demonstrate the ability to resolve organic synthesis challenges effectively utilizing available information and technical expertise, and proactively seek out new information in the literature and incorporate this into workflow.
Scientists are expected to keep accurate and up-to-date records, including an electronic notebook that documents research according to AbbVie policies, demonstrate a high degree of responsibility in maintaining safe laboratory practices and scientific standards, participate in establishing near-term scientific/chemistry strategies, and contribute to the generation and publication of intellectual property.
Collaborations with functional and technical experts across disciplines will be required to facilitate scientific achievement.

Position will be hired based on level of experience.


For Scientist II:

  • Master’s or Bachelor’s Degree in Organic/Medicinal Chemistry with 5+ years (MS) or 7+ years (BS)

For Scientist I:

  • Master’s or Bachelor’s Degree in Organic/Medicinal Chemistry with 2+ years (MS) or 5+ years (BS)


  • MS and pharmaceutical industry experience

Key Leadership Competencies:

Successful candidates will build strong relationships with peers and cross functionally with partners outside of the chemistry team to enable higher performance and faster learning.  Candidates will grasp the "essence" of problems allowing quick course changes when indicated and raising of the bar above the status quo.  Candidates will create a learning environment within the Centralized Medicinal Chemistry group by being open to suggestions and experimentation for improvement and embracing the ideas of others by nurturing innovation and innovation.
