AbbVie is looking for a Scientist, Chemistry with strong synthetic skills. 

This individual will work under the mentorship of a supervisor to discover, develop and execute routes, with particular emphasis on biocatalyzed transformations, to compounds that treat a variety of diseases. 

The candidate will be a member of an integrated Process Research & Development project team, consisting of chemists (synthetic, biosynthetic, structural, analytical) and engineers, with the goal of identifying and developing novel and practical enzymatic transformations to newly discovered therapeutic targets. 

The ideal candidate will be enthusiastic and productive, with excellent communication skills and expertise in synthetic organic chemistry, compound synthesis, compound isolation, modern analytical techniques and compound characterization.

*Grade level and compensation will be commensurate with experience.*


  • M.S. degree in chemistry with 0+ years of laboratory experience or B.S. degree in chemistry with 3+ years laboratory experience. 
  • Broad range of functional expertise in modern synthetic organic chemistry, compound purification and spectral analysis/interpretation.
  • Desire to work with biocatalysts to identify and optimize reactions toward target molecules.
  • Ability to search the chemical literature to find viable solutions to synthetic problems.
  • Willingness to work occasional nights and weekends, when necessary.





Preferred Qualifications:


  • M.S. degree in chemistry with 3+ years of laboratory experience or B.S. degree in chemistry with 5+ years laboratory experience. 
  • Experience with synthetic method development, new reaction discovery, study of reaction mechanisms or total synthesis.
  • Experience with/strong understanding of biocatalysis, modern biotechnology and high-throughput screening techniques.
  • Record of scientific accomplishment with author credit in peer-reviewed publications
  • Ability to independently lead his/her own chemistry research and effectively function in a goal-oriented team environment.
