Our Protein Analytics Department located at the AbbVie Bioresearch Center in Worcester, MA is looking for a highly motivated Associate Scientist II to join the Analytical Characterization Team! Our group is responsible for the development, qualification, and execution of analytical methods to provide product and process understanding for biological entities from discovery through commercial stages!


As a key member of our team, you will focus on providing routine, investigative, and extended characterization analyses (i.e., LC-MS, LC separation methods, and biophysical methods) of AbbVie’s biologics to support product and process development for early-phase, late-phase, and commercial programs. Additionally, you will contribute to the development and testing of analytical assays and will provide continuous improvement and innovation within the team.


Key Responsibilities Include:

  • Perform mass spectrometry analyses (i.e., intact/subunit mass analysis by LC-MS and peptide mapping by LC-MS) of AbbVie’s biologics to provide sequence verification and post-translational modification profiles
  • Perform biophysical assays (CD, DSC, and AUC) to support characterization studies
  • Assist with method development and lab equipment maintenance
  • Independently generate detailed, reliable, and reproducible data in a timely manner
  • Demonstrate experimental design capabilities and strong data interpretation skills
  • Coordinate and document experiments and results in an electronic laboratory notebook

  • BS or MS degree in chemistry, biology, biochemistry or related technical discipline with typically 3+ (BS) or 0 (MS) years of relevant experience; Experience in biotech/pharmaceutical industry setting or equivalent is preferred
  • Full understanding of fundamentals and hands-on experience with protein mass spectrometry, liquid chromatography, or protein biophysical characterization
  • Strong understanding of protein structure and common post-translational modifications
  • Proficient with Windows 10 and Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel, Word, and PowerPoint)
  • Excellent written communication, oral communication, organization, and multitasking skills
  • Hardworking and motivated to drive both efficiency and quality.
  • Understand and enforce to corporate standards regarding code of conduct, safety, and appropriate handling of materials.
